Email evolves

While email marketing is not the sexiest, what one startup is doing is pretty cool. Movable Ink, in the business of delivering dynamic content to email, allows you to crop live content from any Web page and add it to a marketing campaign. One scenario they put forth: “If you are in a time-sensitive business (products sell out quickly, deals have an expiration, you carry just-in-time inventory), then you can create a greater sense of urgency in your email. Create expiring coupons, show time left in a deal or present a real-time calendar.”

The technology also delivers geo-targeting (tailoring content based on where an email is opened) and creative optimization (auto-picking the best-performing imagery, for instance, based on clickthrough, conversion or email-view duration).

It’s Life in Real Time meets Hyper-Personalization meets The Urgency Economy meets Location-Based Everything (some of the trends we’ve spotlighted in recent years). It seems that email may finally be catching up with our real-time world.

Definitely a step in the right direction…I think email (as we know it right now) simply won’t survive in our more-urgent-by-the-second world. Movable Ink certainly addresses some of the real time issues that plague email marketing, but in the long run, I think the attention span of the average person is going to dwindle down to non-existent, not even long enough to take the time to open an email and scan to see if it’s worth reading past the subject line (even if the email DOES contain personalized content). With so many other sources for marketing info that live where your consumers live, (Facebook obviously comes to mind, but also Google, Twitter…the list is long) I think the only way email marketing can stay competitive is if email itself evolves into something of a newsfeed, an aggregator of sorts that can keep pace with the “now” nature of the world we live in.

The pairing (which, Adweek notes, seemed inevitable) offers “a sort of social diary, co-written by your friends and family” to help people better stalk their dates.

    “We call it Radical Transparency,” says e-tail startup Everlane. The company, known for its luxe basics, was built on the principle of disclosing production costs and keeping markups as low as possible. Now, Everlane has launched the Transparent City tour, a first-of-its-kind look at the inner workings of like-minded local companies. The kickoff event in LA brought guests behind the scenes with local bloggers, designers and chefs to learn about their creative inspiration. And, perhaps the culmination of the week — Everlane invited a select few on a tour of their factory, sharing the garment construction process from start to finish. The tour had a 300-person waitlist.

  • Incremental saving and giving

    Call it progress or just laziness—apps are popping up that harness our small change and put it to better use. Acorns, dubbed “the Tinder of investing,” links to a user’s debit or credit card and rounds up to the nearest dollar on every purchase. The app then takes that spare change and invests it in a portfolio of the user’s choice—portfolios range from low to high risk (and reward). Or users can opt to let Acorns choose for them based on their age, goals, income and other factors. Meanwhile, apps like Qapital and Digit facilitate regular small transfers from checking to savings, and banks themselves are getting on the incremental savings bandwagon.     Hotel giant Starwood has bought in to the sharing economy. The group, which owns W Hotels, St. Regis and Sheraton, has announced a partnership with car service Uber in which every dollar spent by a guest on an Uber car earns points toward free rooms and other perks.

    The worlds of science, gastronomy and art are continuing to cross-pollinate—from edible conceptual art to molecular gastronomy “lab cafés” to synesthetic dining events. Café ArtScience in Cambridge, Mass., is a recent example. Opened late last year by David Edwards, a Harvard engineering professor, the café serves whiskey “fogs” through a special carafe that turns the liquor into vapor (which means consumers don’t take in any of the calories and feel none of the intoxicating effects).
