Data point: Social media: employer’s friend or foe?

Social media has become a virtual watercooler for workers, as we’ve written, a phenomenon that some companies see as a drain on productivity while others recognize some advantages. This infographic from mindflash, based on an informal global survey by Proskauer, looks at how employers feel about social media use at work. Slightly more than half of companies now have policies regarding social networking use, with more than a quarter saying they monitor employee use of social media at work and a similar percentage reporting they don’t allow any employees to access social networking sites for personal purposes. But almost a third of companies see a business advantage in letting employees access social networking sites for business or personal use, and more than half see an advantage in allowing access for business purposes.
