The mobile phone is becoming the key device for uploading and sharing photos. (Indeed, a recent ad from Apple attests to this, noting that more photos are taken with the iPhone than any other camera.) In her annual Internet Trends report, which she presented this week, KPCB partner Mary Meeker spotlights the rapid growth of photo sharing, with more than 500 million photos uploaded and shared via Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and Flickr each day. And while Facebook remains the dominant platform for photo-sharing, mobile-specific Snapchat and Instagram are quickly becoming key platforms as well. Meeker shows Snapchat data that charts its rapid adoption over the past year: In 2013 alone, the number of daily “Snaps” zoomed from around 50 million to roughly 150 million.

Meeker forecasts that the daily number of photos uploaded and shared will double over the next year. Snapchat and other Instant-Erase Apps—as we termed one of our 100 Things to Watch in 2013—will be a major driver of this behavior. This platform is a challenging one for brands, but a few are tapping into it in creative ways, including Taco Bell and frozen yogurt chain 16 Handles.
